King Arthur was a king of
the Britons several hundreds of years ago.
কয়েকশো বছর আগে ব্রিটনদের রাজা ছিলেন রাজা আর্থার।
He was a very popular and
brave king.
তিনি খুব জনপ্রিয় আর সাহসী রাজা ছিলেন।
There are many legends about
him.
তাঁকে নিয়ে অনেক কিংবদন্তি প্রচলিত রয়েছে।
The following tale is an
adaptation from the ancient Arthurian legends.
নীচের গল্পটি আর্থারকে নিয়ে প্রচলিত একটি প্রাচীন কাহিনি অবলম্বনে রচিত।
Let's read:
Many hundreds of years ago,
England was ruled by a king called Uther-Pendragon.
বহু শত বছর আগে উত্থার-পেনড্রাগন নামে এক রাজা ইংল্যান্ডে রাজত্ব করতেন।
The king, who was friend and
protector to all his people, was fair to everyone.
একজন রাজা, যিনি
ছিলেন সমস্ত প্রজার বন্ধু ও রক্ষাকর্তা, এই রাজা প্রত্যেকের জন্য ন্যাযা ও নিরপেক্ষ ছিলেন অর্থাৎ
প্রত্যেকেই তাঁর কাছে ন্যায্য বিচারলাভ করত।
The people of Britain lived
in peace and happiness, tending their flocks and tilling their fields.
গৃহপালিত পশু চরিয়ে আর চাষবাস করে ব্রিটেনের অধিবাসীরা সুখে শান্তিতেই বসবাস
করত।
King Uther-Pendragon had
married the beautiful Lady Igraine, and had a son.
রাজা উথার-পেনড্রাগন ইগ্রেইন নামক এক সুন্দরী মহিলাকে বিয়ে করেন, তাঁদের একটি পুত্রসন্তান হয়।
This child was the heir to
the royal throne.
এই শিশুটিই ছিল রাজসিংহাসনের উত্তরাধিকারী।
The king and the queen died
soon after the baby boy was born.
এই বাচ্চা ছেলেটা জন্মানোর পরপরই রাজা এবং রানি মারা যান।
It was a difficult time.
অত্যন্ত কঠিন সময় ছিল সেটা।
Many of the king's opponents
were looking to seize the throne.
রাজার বিরোধীপক্ষের অনেকেই সিংহাসন দখল করার সুযোগ খুঁজছিল।
King Uther- Pendragon had
two wise counsellors-Merlin, a prophet and a magician, and the brave knight,
Sir Ulfius.
রাজা উথার-পেনড্রাগনের দুজন জ্ঞানীগুণী সভাসদ ছিলেন – একজন হলেন মার্লিন, যিনি ছিলেন ভবিষ্যত বক্তা ও জাদুকর আর একজন ছিলেন সাহসী
নাইট অর্থাৎ যোদ্ধা স্যার উলফিয়াস।
They were greatly trusted by
the royal family.
তাঁদের ওপর রাজপরিবারের অগাধ বিশ্বাস ছিল।
When the king and the queen
were no more, the two counsellors met Sir Ector the Trustworthy, a loyal
subject of the king, on a cold and windy midnight.
যখন রাজা আর রানি বর্তমান ছিলেন না, তখন শীতকালের এক ঝড়ের মাঝরাতে স্যার এক্টর নামে রাজার এক
বিশ্বাসী অনুগত প্রজার সঙ্গে এই দুই উপদেষ্টা দেখা করেন।
They placed in his hands a
baby wrapped in a scarlet cloak.
উজ্জ্বল লাল রঙের কাপড়ে মোড়া একটা শিশু তাঁরা তাঁর হাতে তুলে দেন।
Merlin said, "We order
you and your wife to bring up this child as though he were your own son."
মার্লিন বলেন, "তুমি ও তোমার স্ত্রী এই শিশুটিকে তোমাদের নিজেদের সন্তান
মনে করে লালনপালন করো।"
"The boy is to be
called Arthur," Sir Ulfius said.
"ছেলেটিকে আর্থার নামে ডাকবে," স্যার উলফিয়াস বললেন।
Sir Ector, being a true
knight, asked no questions and promised to obey his late king's counsellors.
সত্যিকারের একজন নাইট হওয়ায় স্যার একটর কোনো প্রশ্ন করলেন না, আর প্রয়াত রাজার সভাসদদের আদেশ মেনে চলার প্রতিজ্ঞা করলেন।
As Merlin and Sir Ulfius had
feared, trouble broke out in Britain after the passing away of the king.
মার্লিন, আর
স্যার উলফিয়াসের আশঙ্কা মতোই রাজার মৃত্যুর পর ব্রিটেনে সমস্যা ছড়িয়ে পড়ল।
The barons were fighting
among themselves and plotting to capture the throne.
অভিজাতরা নিজেদের মধ্যে যুদ্ধ করতে লাগল আর সিংহাসন অধিকারের ষড়যন্ত্র করতে
লাগল।
Britain was in the grip of lawlessness.
সমগ্র ব্রিটেন তখন অরাজকতা ও বিশৃঙ্খলায় ভরপুর হয়েছিল।
Travelers were regularly robbed.
ভ্রমণকারীরা নিয়মিতভাবে লুণ্ঠিত হতে থাকল।
The peasants were unhappy.
প্রজারা অসুখী হয়ে উঠল।

him with the baby. They were confident that Ector would bring up the baby with
due care and protect him from all dangers.
