During and after the wars,
he travelled to India and South East Asia.

দক্ষিণ-পূর্ব এশিয়ার দেশগুলিতে ভ্রমণ করেছিলেন।
Of Human Bondage is regarded
as Maugham's most important novel.

Princess September, the
daughter of the king of Siam, was very unhappy.
সিয়ামের রাজার মেয়ে রাজকুমারী সেপ্টেম্বর খুবই দুঃখী ছিল।
She was weeping alone one
day in her own room when she saw a little bird hop in.
একদিন সে যখন তার ঘরে একা একা বসে কাঁদছিল, তখন সে একটা ছোট্ট পাখিকে লাফ দিয়ে তার ঘরে ঢুকতে দেখল।
Then the little bird began
to sing.
তারপর ছোট্ট পাখিটা গান গাইতে শুরু করল।
He sang a beautiful song all
about the lake in the king's garden and the willow trees reflected in the still
water.
রাজার বাগানের সরোবর আর তার শির জলে ছায়া-পড়া উইলো গাছগুলোকে নিয়ে একটা সুন্দর
গান সে গাইল।
When he had finished, the
Princess was not crying any more.
যখন তার গান গাওয়া শেষ হল, রাজকুমারী আর কাঁদছিল না।
"That was a very nice
song", she said.
"খুব সুন্দর তো গানটা," সে বলল।
"Would you want me to
live with you?" said the little bird.
"তুমি কি চাও আমি তোমার সঙ্গে থাকি?"
ছোট্ট পাখিটা জিজ্ঞেস করল।
Princess September clapped
her hands with delight.
রাজকুমারী সেপ্টেম্বর আনন্দে হাততালি দিয়ে উঠল।
Then the little bird hopped
on to the end of the bed and sang her to sleep.
ছোট পাখিটা তখন লাফিয়ে বিছানার শেষপ্রান্তে গিয়ে বসে গান গেয়ে তাকে ঘুম পাড়িয়ে
দিল।
When she awoke the next day
the little bird was still sitting there, and as she opened her eyes he said
good morning.
পরদিন যখন তার ঘুম ভাঙল ছোট্ট পাখিটা তখনও সেখানে বসেছিল, আর সে যেই তার চোখ খুলল অমনি পাখিটা সুপ্রভাত জানাল।
She stretched out the first
finger of her right hand so that it served as a perch.
সে তার ডান হাতের তর্জনীটা বাড়িয়ে দিল যাতে এটা দাঁড়ের কাজ করে।
The little bird flew down
and sat on it.
ছোট্ট পাখিটা উড়ে এসে এর ওপর বসে পড়ল।
Then she went through the
palace and called on each of the princesses in turn.
এরপর রাজকুমারী প্রাসাদের মধ্যে ঘুরে ঘুরে এক এক করে প্রত্যেক রাজকুমারীর
সঙ্গে দেখা করল।
And for each of the
princesses the little bird sang a different song.
আর প্রত্যেক রাজকুমারীর জন্য ছোট পাখিটা আলাদা আলাদা গান গাইল।
The other princesses were
jealous and visited September together.
অন্য রাজকুমারীদের ভারী হিংসে হল আর তারা একসঙ্গে সেপ্টেম্বরের সঙ্গে দেখা
করতে এল।
"Well, my dear,"
they said, "your little bird flies in and out just as he likes."
"আচ্ছা, সোনা বোন," তারা
বলল,
"তোমার ছোট্ট পাখিটা তো তার যেমন খুশি
উড়ে যেতে আসতে পারে।"
They looked round the room.
তারা ঘরের ভেতরটা একবার চোখ বুলিয়ে নিল।
"Where is your bird
now?" they said.
"এখন তোমার পাখিটা কোথায়?" তারা জিজ্ঞাসা করল।
"He's gone off to visit
his home," said September.
"সে তার বাড়ি ঘুরে আসতে গেছে,” সেপ্টেম্বর বলল।
"And what makes you
think he'll come back?" asked the princesses.
"সে যে ফিরে আসবে এ কথা তুমি কী করে বলতে পারছ?"
রাজকুমারীরা জিজ্ঞেস করল।
"He always does come
back", said September.
"সে সবসময়ই ফিরে আসে," সেপ্টেম্বর উত্তর দিল।
"Well, my dear,"
said the princesses, "if you take our advice, pop him into the cage and
keep him there."
"ভালোকথা বাছা," রাজকুমারীরা বলল, "অবশ্য আমাদের উপদেশ যদি তুমি নাও, ওটাকে খাঁচায় ভরো আর সেখানেই ওটাকে রেখে দাও।"
"But I like to have him
fly around the room", said the Princess.
"কিন্তু ঘরের চারদিকে তার এই উড়ে বেড়ানো আমার ভালো লাগে,"
রাজকুমারী বলে উঠল।
"Safety first,"
said her sisters ominously.
"প্রথমে নিরাপত্তা (সাবধানের মার নেই),"
তার বোনেরা তাকে সাবধান করে বলল।
They got up and walked out
of the room, shaking their heads, and they left September very uneasy.
তারা উঠে পড়ল এবং মাথা নাড়তে নাড়তে ঘরের বাইরে বেরিয়ে গেল, আর তারা সেপ্টেম্বরকে ভারী অস্বস্তির মধ্যে ফেলে দিয়ে গেল।
It seemed to her that the
little bird was away a long time and she could not think what he was doing.

He might forget her, or he
might take a fancy to someone else!
