Suddenly, September heard a
tweet-tweet just behind her ear.
হঠাৎ,
সেপ্টেম্বর তার ঠিক কানের পিছনে টুই-টুই শব্দ শুনতে পেল।
The bird had come in
quietly.
পাখিটা চুপিসারে এসে পড়েছে।
September felt her heart go
thump-thump against her chest, and she made up her mind to take no more risks.
সেপ্টেম্বর অনুভব করল তার বুকটা ধড়াস-ধড়াস করছে, আর তখনই সে মনস্থির করে ফেলল যে সে আর কোনো ঝুঁকি নেবে না।
She put up her hand and took
hold of the bird.
সে তার হাত বাড়িয়ে পাখিটাকে ধরে ফেলল।
The bird was quite used to
this, so he suspected nothing.
এরকমটার সঙ্গে খুব ভালোমতোই অভ্যস্ত ছিল পাখিটা, তাই কোনোরকম সন্দেহ জাগল না তার মনে।
He was surprised when she
carried him to the cage, put him in, and shut the door on him.
যখন সে তাকে খাঁচার কাছে নিয়ে গিয়ে তাকে সেটার ভেতর ঢুকিয়ে দরজা বন্ধ করে দিল
তখন সে অবাক হয়ে গেল।
He hopped up on the ivory
perch and said, "What is wrong?"
সে লাফিয়ে হাতির দাঁতের তৈরি দাঁড়ের। ওপর উঠে বলল,
"কী, ব্যাপার কী?"
September said, "Some
of mamma's cats are prowling about tonight, and I think you are much safer out
here.
সেপ্টেম্বর বলল, "মায়ের বিড়ালগুলোর কয়েকটা আজ রাতে শিকার ধরার জন্য বের হতে
পারে,
আর তাই আমার মনে হয় তুমি এখানেই অনেক বেশি নিরাপদে
থাকবে।"
"Well, just for this
once I don't mind" said the little bird, "so long as you let me out
in the morning."
"বেশ, কেবল এই
একবারই আমি কিছু মনে করব না," ছোট্ট পাখিটা বলল, "যে পর্যন্ত না আমায় সকালে বাইরে বার করে দিচ্ছ।"
He ate a very good supper
and began to sing. But in the middle of his song he stopped.
সে ভালোভাবে রাতের খাবার খেয়ে গান গাইতে শুরু করল। কিন্তু গানের মাঝখানে সে
থেমে গেল।
"I don't know what the
matter with me is," he said, "but I don't feel like singing
tonight."
"আমি বুঝতে পারছি না আমার কী হচ্ছে,"
সে বলে উঠল, "আজ রাতে আমার গান গাইতে ইচ্ছা করছেনা।"
"Very well," said
September, "go to sleep instead!"
"বেশ, ঠিক আছে,"
সেপ্টেম্বর বলল, "তাহলে ঘুমিয়ে পড়ো।"
So he put his head under his
wing and in a minute was fast asleep.
ফলে সে তার ডানার মধ্যে মাথা গুঁজে দিয়ে মুহূর্তের মধ্যে গভীর ঘুমে ঢলে পড়ল।
September went to sleep too.
সেপ্টেম্বরও ঘুমোতে চলে গেল।
But when the dawn broke she
was awakened by the little bird calling her at the top of his voice, "Wake
up, wake up," he said, "Open the door of this cage and let me out.
কিন্তু যখন ভোর হল ছোট্ট পাখিটা তার গলায় যত জোর ছিল তা দিয়ে "উঠে পড়ো, জাগো" বলে ডেকে ডেকে তার ঘুম ভাঙিয়ে দিল। "খাঁচার
দরজা খুলে আমায় বাইরে বার করো।
I want to have a good fly
while the dew is still wet on the ground."
মাটি শিশিরে ভেজা থাকতে থাকতেই আমি এক চক্কর উড়ে আসতে চাই।"
"You're much better off
where you are," said September.
"তুমি যেখানে রয়েছ সেখানেই বেশ ভালো আছ,"
সেপ্টেম্বর বলল।
"You have a beautiful
golden cage!"
"তোমার খাঁচাটা কী সুন্দর সোনার তৈরি বলো দেখি!"
"Let me out, let me
out," said the little bird.
"আমায় বাইরে আসতে দাও, আমায় বের করো," ছোট্ট পাখিটা বলে উঠল।
"You'll have three
meals a day.
"সারাদিনে তুমি তিনবার খাবারদাবার পাবে।
You'll have nothing to worry
you from morning till night, and you can sing to your heart's content."
সকাল থেকে রাত্তির পর্যন্ত তোমার কোনো দুশ্চিন্তা থাকবে না, আর তাই তুমি প্রাণ ভরে গান গাইতে পারবে।"
The little bird tried to
slip through the bars of the cage, but he couldn't.
ছোট্ট পাখিটা খাঁচার গরাদগুলো গলে বের হবার চেষ্টা করল, কিন্তু পারল না।
He beat against the door but
of course he couldn't open it.
সে দরজায় ঠোকরাতে লাগল কিন্তু বলা বাহুল্য, সে সেটা খুলতে পারল না।
He began to cry
again: "Let me out, let me out!"
আবার সে কাঁদতে শুরু করল, "আমায় বের করে দাও, আমায় বের করে দাও!"
"I've only put you in
the cage because I'm so fond of you", said Princess September.
"আমি তোমাকে খুব পছন্দ করি বলেই তোমায় খাঁচায় রেখেছি,"
রাজকুমারী সেপ্টেম্বর বলল।
But the little bird stood in
the corner of his cage, looking out at the blue sky, and never sang a note.
কিন্তু ছোট্ট পাখিটা তার খাঁচার এক কোণে দাঁড়িয়ে বাইরে নীল আকাশের দিকে তাকিয়ে
রইল,
কোনো গান গাইল না।
"Why don't you sing and
forget your troubles?" said September.
"তোমার কষ্ট ভুলে গিয়ে তুমি গান গাইছ না কেন?"
সেপ্টেম্বর বলল।
"How can I sing?"
answered the bird.
"কী করে গাইব আমি?" পাখিটা উত্তর দিল।
"I want to see the
trees and the lake and the green rice growing in the fields."
"গাছপালা, সরোবর আর বাড়তে থাকা সবুজ ধানখেত দেখতে চাই আমি।"
"If that's all you
want, I'll take you for a walk," said September.
"যদি এটাই তোমার ইচ্ছে হয়ে থাকে, তাহলে আমি তোমায় বেড়িয়ে আনব," সেপ্টেম্বর বলল।

himself from the cage?
Answer: - The little bird
tried his best to free himself from the cage. He tried to slip through the bars
of the cage. He beat against the door to open it. But all his attempts ended in
smoke.
