[Curtain goes up.
[পর্দা উঠল।
In deep centre stage a high
and large square box looking like a pedestal is placed.
মঞ্চের একেবারে পেছনের দিকের মাঝখানে বেদির মতো দেখতে একটা বড়ো উঁচু বাক্স
রাখা আছে।
Upon the box stands the
Happy Prince. He stands stiffly resembling a statue.
বাক্সের উপর সুখী রাজপুত্র দাঁড়িয়ে। তার দৃঢ়ভাবে দাঁড়ানোর ধরন দেখে মনে হবে
সেটা একটা মূর্তি।
A statue is what the Happy
Prince is.
মূর্তিটা হল সুখী রাজপুত্রের বর্তমান অবস্থা।
He is wearing a golden tunic
and stands still with legs apart, his hands resting on the hilt of a sword
whose tip rests on the pedestal-shaped box.
সে একটা ঢিলেঢালা সোনালি পোশাক পরে আছে, আর পা দুটো ফাঁক করে স্থির হয়ে দাঁড়িয়ে আছে, তার হাত দুটি তরবারির বাঁট স্পর্শ করে আছে, তরবারির ডগা বেদি-আকৃতির বাক্স স্পর্শ করে রয়েছে।
A large red stone is fixed
on the side of the hilt.
একটি বড়ো আকারের লাল পাথর তরবারির হাতলের একপাশে আটকানো রয়েছে।
The open eyes of the Happy
Prince are individually covered with blue coloured paper cut in the shape of
the eye and lightly glued to hold them in place.
সুখী রাজপুত্রের খোলা চোখ দুটির এক-একটায় চোখের মাপে কাটা নীল রঙের কাগজের
টুকরো হাল্কা আঠা দিয়ে আটকানো।
The statue of Happy Prince
faces the audience.
সুখী রাজপুত্রের মুর্তিটা দর্শকদের দিকে মুখ করে রয়েছে।
A few young students holding
books, bags on their shoulders come out of the left wing, cross the stage
talking.
মঞ্চের বাঁ-দিক থেকে কয়েকজন তরুণ ছাত্রছাত্রী হাতে বই, কাঁধে ব্যাগ নিয়ে কথা বলতে বলতে মঞ্চের উপর দিয়ে চলে যায়।
The stage is lit in yellow.]
মঞ্চে হলুদ আলো জ্বলে ওঠে।]
Student 1: So this is the
famous statue of Happy Prince.
প্রথম ছাত্র: তাহলে এটাই সুখী রাজপুত্রের সেই বিখ্যাত মূর্তি।
[They pause and gather
admiringly around the statue of the Happy Prince]
[তারা থমকে দাঁড়াল আর সুখী রাজপুত্রের মূর্তির চারদিকে গোল

Student 2: He is very well
known in this land.
দ্বিতীয় ছাত্র: এদেশে ইনি বেশ সুপরিচিতই। Happy Prince lived in the
wonderful palace of
Sans-Souci.
মনোমুগ্ধকর রাজপ্রাসাদ সন্স-সুসি-তে সুখী রাজপুত্র বাস করত।
During the day, he played
with his friends in the palace garden.
দিনের বেলায় সে তার বন্ধুদের নিয়ে প্রাসাদের বাগানে খেলে বেড়াত।
By night, he sang and
laughed.
রাতে সে গান গেয়ে আর হাসি তামাশায় সময় কাটাত।
He had no idea about the
people of this world who live outside his palace.
এই প্রাসাদের বাইরে থাকা পৃথিবীর মানুষদের সম্বন্ধে তার কোনো ধারণাই ছিল না।
Student 1: You mean he never
felt sad?
প্রথম ছাত্র: তার মানে তুমি বলতে চাইছ দুঃখ কী তা সে জানত না?
Student 2: Nothing sad ever
entered the door of the prince's palace.
দ্বিতীয় ছাত্রঃ রাজন সবাই তাকে সুধী জা দিয়ে কখনও দুঃখ ভেতরে ঢোকেনি।
Everyone called him the
Happy Prince and when he died, the town built this statue and named it the
same.
রাজপুর নামেই ডাকত, আর যখন
তার মৃত্যু হল, তখন
শহরের লোকেরা তার মূর্তি গড়ে সেই একই নাম রাখল।
Student 3: The Happy Prince
is built with gold from head to foot.

His eyes are two precious
sapphires and there is a big red ruby on his sword hilt.

[Student 1 glances up at the
Happy Prince with awe.

They start walking.
তারা হাঁটতে শুরু করল।
Student 2 speaks when they
are close to the right wing exit.]
ডান দিকের প্রস্থান পথের কাছাকাছি যখন তারা এসে গেছে তখন দ্বিতীয় ছাত্র কথা

Student 2: In this town,
everyone loves the Happy Prince.
দ্বিতীয় ছাত্র: এই শহরে সকলেই সুখী রাজপুত্রকে ভালোবাসে।
[They go out.
[তারা প্রস্থান করল।
A sad, tired-looking man
immediately enters the stage from the right.
সঙ্গে সঙ্গে ডান দিক থেকেই একজন দুঃখী, ক্লান্ত মতন লোক মধে ঢুকে এল।
He limps down with an
unhappy expression.
সে অসুখী অভিব্যক্তির সঙ্গে নিস্তেজ ছিল।
He stops before the statue
of the Happy Prince and looks unhappily for three seconds.
সে সুখী রাজপুত্রের মূর্তির সামনে গিয়ে দাঁড়াল আর অনিচ্ছাভরে তার দিকে তিন
সেকেন্ড তাকাল।
He starts limping towards
the left wing exit, muttering loudly to himself.]
তারপর খোঁড়াতে খোঁড়াতে জোরে জোরে নিজের মনে বিড়বিড় করতে করতে বাঁ-দিকের
প্রস্থান পথের দিকে এগিয়ে গেল।]
Man : At least, there's one
truly happy man in this town.
লোকটি: অন্তত একজন সত্যিকারের সুখী লোক এই শহরে রয়েছে।

[The sad, tired man goes out
through the left wing exit.

Immediately from the left
wing emerges a young mother dragging her little boy by the hand.
সঙ্গে সঙ্গে বাঁ-দিক দিয়েই এক তরুণীম তার ছোট্ট ছেলের হাত ধরে টানতে টানতে
ঢুকে পড়ল।
The boy is crying.
ছেলেটা কাঁদছে।
Mother is trying to stop the
boy from crying.
মা ছেলেটির কান্না থামাবার চেষ্টা করছে।
They reach the statue of the
Happy Prince.
তারা সুখী রাজপুত্রের মূর্তির কাছে গিয়ে পৌঁছোল।
Mother speaks while walking]
হাঁটছে হাঁটতে মা কথা বলছে।]
Young mother: I can't
understand why you keep crying!
তরুণী মা: আমি বুঝতে পারছি না কেন তুমি কেঁদেই চলেছ!
Why can't you be happy?
কেন তুমি খুশি হতে পারছ না?
The Happy Prince never cries
for new things.
সুখী রাজপুত্র কখনও নতুন জিনিসের জন্য বায়না করে কাঁদে না।
[Mother and son go out
through the left wing exit.
[বাঁ-দিকের প্রস্থান পথ দিয়ে মা ও ছেলে বেরিয়ে গেল।
The stage light changes to
blue.
মঞ্চের আলো পরিবর্তিত হয়ে নীল রঙের হয়ে গেল।
The twittering call of a
bird is heard in the background.
নেপথ্য থেকে একটা পাখির কিচিরমিচির ডাক শোনা গেল।
Swallow, the bird, dressed
in a black tunic, cardboard wings attached to its back, enters stage from the
right, joyously tripping.
কালো লম্বা ঝুলের পোশাক পরিহিত পিঠে কার্ডবোর্ডের ডানা লাগানো সোয়ালো পাখি
আনন্দে নাচতে নাচতে ডানদিক দিয়ে মঞ্চে প্রবেশ করল।
The Swallow flaps its hands
quickly to indicate flying.
সোয়ালো উড়ে যাচ্ছে বোঝাতে তার হাত দুটো দিয়ে দ্রুত ডানা ঝাপটানোর ভঙ্গি করল।
Swallow reaches centre
stage, before the statue of the Happy Prince.]
এভাবে সোয়ালো মঞ্চের মাঝখানে সুখী রাজপুত্রের মুর্তির সামনে উপস্থিত হল।]
Swallow It's much too cold
here.
সোয়ালো: এখানে খুব বেশি ঠান্ডা।
All my friends have left for
warm Egypt.
আমার বন্ধুরা সবাই গরমের দেশ মিশরের উদ্দেশে রওনা দিয়েছে।
I too must fly.
যথেষ্ট ওড়া হয়েছে।
But tonight I will rest in
this unknown town.
কিন্তু আজ রাতে আমি এই অজানা শহরে বিশ্রাম নেব।
The shelter between the feet
of this golden statue looks good enough.
এই সোনার মুর্তিটার দু-পায়ের মাঝে আশ্রয় বেশ ভালোই হবে মনে হয়।
[The Swallow perches on the
pedestal- shaped box, holding a leg of the statue and resting his head against
it.
[সোয়ালো উড়ে গিয়ে বেদির মতো আকৃতির বাক্সটার উপর গিয়ে বসল, মূর্তিটার একটা পা ধরে সেটায় তার মাথাটা ঠেকাল।
Swallow jerks and jumps up
suddenly after five seconds]
পাঁচ সেকেন্ড পরেই সোয়ালো হঠাৎ ঝাঁকুনি দিয়ে লাফিয়ে উঠে পড়ল।]
Swallow: I thought this
golden room was good shelter.
সোয়ালো: ভেবেছিলাম এই সোনার ঘর আমার জন্য ভালো আশ্রয় হবে।
But I'm getting wet in the
rain.
কিন্তু আমি বৃষ্টিতে ভিজে যাচ্ছি।
[The Swallow sticks its neck
out and looks upwards.
[সোয়ালো তার গলাটা লম্বা করে বাড়িয়ে ওপরের দিকে তাকাল।
He looks puzzled]
তাকে কেমন যেন হতভম্ব দেখাচ্ছে।]
Swallow: And yet, the sky is
clear.
সোয়ালো: আর এদিকে আকাশ পরিষ্কার।
It's not raining.
বৃষ্টি তো হচ্ছে না।
[Swallow jumps up again as
if a second drop of water had fallen.
[সোয়ালো আবার লাফিয়ে উঠল যেন বৃষ্টির দ্বিতীয় ফোঁটাটা পড়ল।
He now looks up at the
statue and is amazed to see tear drops beneath its eyes.]
সে এবার মূর্তিটার দিকে তাকাল আর চোখের কোলে জল দেখে অবাক হয়ে গেল।]
Swallow: Who are you?
সোয়ালো: কে তুমি?
Why are you crying?
আর কাঁদছই বা কেন?
Statue: I'm the Happy
Prince.
মূর্তি: আমি হলাম সুখী রাজকুমার।
I spent my life in a palace.
রাজপ্রাসাদে আমি আমার জীবন কাটিয়েছি।
Now I am dead, and a statue.
মারা যাওয়ার পর এখন আমি মূর্তি।
I stand in the middle of
this town.
এই শহরের মাঝখানে আমি দাঁড়িয়ে রয়েছি।
I can see the poor people
and all the ugly things in my land.
এখন আমি আমার দেশের গরিব মানুষদের আর যা কিছু খারাপ সমস্তই দেখতে পাই।
Swallow: I see you have a
golden heart.

Statue: My feet are fixed
here.

house in a little street.
মূর্তি: ছোটো রাস্তার ওদিকে একটা ভাঙাচোরা গরিব মানুষের অভাবী বাড়ি রয়েছে।
A woman is making a dress
for a beautiful, young lady of the palace.
একজন মহিলা প্রাসাদের সুন্দরী তরুণীর জন্য পোশাক তৈরি করছে।
The woman is poor and her
son is suffering from fever.
মহিলা গরিব আর তার ছেলে জ্বরে ভুগছে।
Swallow, take the ruby from
my sword- hilt and give it to her.
সোয়ালো, আমার
তরবারির বাঁট থেকে এই চুনিটা নিয়ে গিয়ে তাকে দিয়ে দাও।
[The stage is lit again.

The light is blue.

Close to the right wing,
there stands now an open cottage made of cardboard.
মঞ্চের ডান দিকে কার্ডবোর্ডে তৈরি খোলা কুটির দাঁড়িয়ে রয়েছে।
There is a backdoor to the
cottage for entry from the right wing.

Prince thus has a humane and serisitive heart. So the Swallow thinks that the
